Meet Jincy who makes the perfect terrarium for your home

Terrariums are the latest trend in home décor, adding a tropical vibe to areas. These miniature gardens grown inside glass containers or sealable jars look incredibly attractive due to the hue of colors used in them. Interestingly, terrariums are small, fully functional ecosystems that are mostly self-sustaining. Therefore, you do not need to open the hermetic glass to water the plants.

Terrariams are often used as decorative or ornamental items rather than for their benefits. The first terrarium was made by the English botanist Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward in 19y century. Jincy Varghese, a native of Vennikulam near Thriuvalla, turned to making Terariam after being impressed by its aesthetics. She now owns a brand called Micro Forest that sells custom terrariums.

    Important
I was working as a nurse in Saudi Arabia. But, eight months ago, I quit my job and went back to Kerala. I’m starting to think of different business ideas I can start with here. I love taking care of plants and decided to make my hobby a profession. I also sell custom made-to-order cakes,” says Jensey.

    Advantages
Since closing, Keralites have been enjoying the growth of indoor plants. However, most people complain about the difficulty of maintaining and watering them when they begin to return to their jobs. Terrarium can replace typical indoor plants that require constant watering and care.

Zero maintenance is the highlight of the terrarium. All you have to do is place it in a corner that receives good sunlight. Condensation and evaporation occur inside an airtight glass container as a cyclic process. Therefore, the terrarium itself can live as a small ecosystem.

    how was it made
Jincy says she has watched videos online to learn the art of terrarium making. They make custom terrarium. Moreover, it also makes it a hobby and experiment with different designs and combinations. Plants are purchased from nurseries and online. Jincy believes that patience and hard work are the keys to making a good, attractive terrarium. She only sells an earthen pot after noticing plants growing inside the glass jar. It will take at least three months to see if the plants are adapting well to the terrarium ecosystem.

Tropical plants such as ferns and moss are perfect for a terrarium. There are two types of terariams – closed and open. Making an airtight terrarium is the most challenging as it is difficult for the plant to survive inside. Small insects such as springtails and isopods are dropped into the terrarium because their presence is important to the survival of the ecosystem. Most people prefer open terraria because it is simple and easy to assemble. Fungi and excess heat are major factors that can affect the health of a terrarium. Jincy has now begun experimenting with glass jars that measure 3 inches to over a foot tall.

The bottles are mostly imported from Dubai and China. From small urns in which two or three plants can be grown to large plants in which up to fifteen bushes can be arranged, Ginsey focuses on a custom-made terrarium.

Prices start from 2,000 rupees onwards. It’s been six months since Ginsey started her terrarium. She is glad that she is earning a decent income from this business. Moreover, she is proud that she turned her favorite hobby into a profitable business idea.
