For the past few days, I’ve been trying to figure out the word to describe my feelings and thoughts after the horrific shootings of innocents in Texas this week and most recently in Buffalo. Being numb is something I’ve heard others say but that’s not accurate for me…because I’m not numb to what’s going on in our world. I don’t know how anyone could feel numb after reading that children smeared blood on their bodies and played dead so they could try to survive. Shock, anger, sadness, and confusion are probably more relevant terms to what my heart feels right now.
Although some events seem somewhat remote and easier to separate from, tragedy, loss, discrimination, and inequality lie in our very own Minnesota. Yes, even in the great medical city of Rochester, Minnesota.

A large part of our world is now pointing the finger and saying that certain issues are the cause of the problems facing our societies today. Unfortunately, a post on Facebook, saying “we want change”, or something like “less policies more praying” without any action or discussion, would be as it is…a social media post.
Our world, our state, and the community of Rochester need more than just a social media post from you.
The United Way in Olmsted County has been in business for months at a massive event called Power of Purpose (also known as POP) that will take place on June 14 at the Rochester International Event Center from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with adorable guest, former NPR host Michelle Norris .

I can almost guarantee you’ve seen someone else share some of your concerns this week as well. It could be a mom you only know through a Facebook group, or a co-worker that you only communicate with virtually. But you heard them – their fears, their fear, their anger as they said “enough”.
My challenge is this…invite them. Share this story on your Facebook page. Tell people about this event. Go live on Instagram or create a TikTok with your kids about it.
People crave change in our society so it can be a thriving field for everyone, but unless they are given opportunities and sometimes invited to be a part of the discussion, the sidelines are where this conversation will remain.
