    Volunteer of the Month, Linda Pollard

    <em> Submitted by Lucy Marinkovich and Satchel Bourne. </em> We are at that time in our lives where it falls to us as young students at Friday Harbor High School to work on a community project and give back to the island that has supported us all our lives. Ms. Wilson was directing the Community Projects chapter this year. Satchel Bourne and I, Lucy Marinkovich, studied builder bees, and worked on setting up bee hotels to live in around the island. We have built bee hotels/houses to provide local bees with a safe place to live and store their eggs. We distributed these bee hotels to local groups such as the San Juan County Conservation Land Bank and Community Garden and placed them next to plants that needed pollination. In turn, both plants and bees will benefit. Solitary bees do not live like builder bees with a hive, and bee hotels are a great way to help them by providing ready-made shelter in gardens and areas with lots of vegetation. We hope that if our project is successful, we will be able to provide our community with many bees each year to help keep the native plants thriving, as well as keep the local people alive by giving them a safe place to live. We want to give back to our community in any way we can and this is how we decided to do it. We also spent time learning about the local bee populations and bees in general, and realized how important they are to all of us. We’re going to give one of these to the community garden across from FHHS to help the garden here in town get more pollinators. The other bee chests will go to the Land Bank at several different locations across the island. We will be placing one at the Land Bank office in town, as well as the Salish Seed Arboretum and Zylstra Lake Preserve. We hope to help these locations we have chosen by bringing bees to them and creating a place for plant life and bee flourishing. We want to especially thank Thor Hanson for being our mentor throughout this project from start to finish. Thor contributed his time and knowledge, and we also shared his passion for bees. We are both really grateful to have been fortunate enough to work with such a helpful and inspiring person.     Animal Protection Friday Harbor is pleased to announce that Linda Pollard is APS-FH Volunteer of the Month for the month of May 2022.

    Linda came to volunteer at APS-FH Treasure Hounds in November 2021, shortly after moving to Friday Harbor.

    Treasure Hounds is APS-FH’s upscale store for resale home décor and furniture. All items for sale in the store are donated and volunteers “work” in the store. Treasure Hounds are important to APS-FH as 100% of their sales support approximately 20% of total operating expenses for APS-FH.

    Linda learned about APS-FH’s Treasure Hound from her uncle, a long-time resident of SJI and a friend of APS-FH. After furnishing her new home in Friday Harbor with many items from the store, Linda decided to join the team of volunteers at Treasure Hounds to work in the store every Friday as a cashier and provide customer service.

    Quickly realizing the opportunity to add more value, Linda offered to take on the role of volunteer coordinator at Treasure Hounds, providing volunteer mentoring and training and coordinating the volunteer schedule. Linda offers encouragement and support to volunteers, and makes sure their experience is positive. Since taking on this role, Linda has helped recruit and train five new volunteers to work in the store. Thank you Linda for making a difference for APS-FH, the animals, and the volunteer team at Treasure Hounds. We are very fortunate to share with you!
