Boomers Have the Power to Influence How They Age – Perhaps Even More Than They Realize

Moorings Park, Naples’ premier Life Plan Community, is hosting an event discussing how – and where – you spend your retirement can help you add years of healthy aging to your life.

Everyone knows that aging is a fact of life.  But while most people understand that diet and exercise impact their health, they still believe that how they age is ultimately based on factors largely out of their control.  But according to the American Psychological Association, “older adults have more control over their aging than they think.”

“Many people think the way we grow older is genetically determined,” says psychologist Manfred Diehl, PhD, director of the Adult Development and Aging Project at Colorado State University.

“That misconception is dangerous because it prevents many adults from taking action that could help them age in a more positive way.” The article goes on to point out that “new evidence also suggests that older adults’ cognitive losses, as well as physical problems such as osteoporosis, can be reduced, delayed or even reversed with early intervention.”
