    Work summary: Under the general direction of the Associate Director of Athletics for Fitness and Wellness, a certified personal fitness coach works with individuals and small groups to achieve personal fitness goals by providing fitness assessments, designing personal fitness training programs and providing direction and supervision of exercises; assists in program management; Manages facilities and equipment related to training; Provides excellent customer service; Participates in the Marketing Program.

    Work duties:

    70% Personal Fitness Instructions

    • Design individual exercise programs for a variety of students, faculty, staff, and community members.
    • Provide in-person and virtual teaching, explanation, and promotion of safe and effective exercise techniques, use of equipment, and facility etiquette.
    • Arrive at sessions early enough to be fully prepared and ready to receive clients at least 5 minutes before scheduled appointments.
    • Start and finish the training session on time according to the given dates.
    • Maintain a positive, encouraging, inclusive, and non-intimidating workout atmosphere.
    • Provide safe, appropriate and effective adjustments when needed.
    • Update and modify exercise designs as needed and as appropriate.
    • Maintain current certifications for all types of training being prescribed and implemented.
    • Limiting the prescription of training and advice to the scope of professional certification practice.
    • Maintain CPR/AED and First Aid certifications.

    15% program management

    • Assist in managing client consultation, receiving, and tracking procedures, including supervision of health record checks, liability waiver signatures, payment verification, and session usage reporting.
    • Documenting training activities and exercises scheduled for each client.
    • Ensure clients sign all required waivers before starting training sessions.
    • Attend all required staff meetings and training sessions.
    • Complete and submit quarterly self-assessments.
    • Read all communications and respond to them from the supervisor in a timely manner.

    5% Facility and Equipment Management

    • Report any unsafe facility and/or equipment condition or repair needs immediately.
    • Prepare facilities and equipment to clean, organize, and secure after each session.
    • Continuously learn and practice proper use of facilities and equipment.
    • Assist in the promotion and enforcement of facility policies.

    5% customer service

    • Welcome customers warmly, enthusiastically and by name (smiling, eye contact, etc.).
    • Report customer issues, concerns, and feedback to the supervisor immediately.
    • Be able to accurately answer questions regarding program fees, sales procedures, facility locations/layouts, program and facility policies, and program information sources.

    5% Marketing

    • Provide notices or reminders before and/or after the session on program information (ie new policies, schedule changes, upcoming promotions, etc.).
    • Participation in promotional programs and events.
    • Regularly update biographical information on the site as needed.
    • Participate in the production of promotional materials as needed (eg photo sessions, videos, etc.).

    Required qualifications:

    • Previous experience Regularly (i.e. once or more per week) coaching or direct assisting with professional coaching for personal fitness clients.
    • Ability to design and prescribe safe, effective and appropriate exercise programs based on the client’s current health conditions and limitations, fitness levels and personal goals.
    • Ability to effectively instruct clients on appropriate exercise techniques, use of fitness equipment, and concepts of fitness (ie achieving suggested heart rate during exercise).
    • Ability to effectively relate and sensitive to the needs of a variety of potential clients regarding age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, physical ability and exercise experience.
    • Ability to communicate effectively, enthusiastically and professionally with a variety of potential clients.
    • English verbal and written communication skills, active listening, and dynamic flexibility in adapting to clients’ needs.

    Preferred qualifications:

    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Significant experience regularly (i.e. once or more per week) coaches personal fitness clients from a variety of backgrounds.
    • The ability to effectively use computer-based communication, scheduling, and productivity services such as Gmail, Google Calendars, Google Drive, Acuity Scheduling and Zoom.
    • Ability to speak Spanish fluently.
    • University degree in a related field (such as kinesiology, physical education, exercise or comparative science)
    • Current Personal Training Certification from an NCCA-accredited organization (eg AAPTE, ACE, AFAA, IFPA, NASM, NCCPT, NETA, NFPT, NSCA, etc.) – see https://www.credentialingexcellence.org/nccadirectory.

    Special working conditions:

    • The selected candidate will be required to pass a criminal history background check prior to employment.
    • You must have a CPR/First Aid/AED certificate or have the ability to obtain it within 60 days of renting.
    • You must possess a valid personal training certificate.
    • Ability to work on a variable schedule including evenings and weekends.
    • You will be required to complete a Title IX (Sexual Harassment) training within one month of employment.
    • You will be required to complete a Title IX (Sexual Harassment) training every two years.
    • You will be required to take the CANRA online training module.
