Chairish’s annual designer survey found that 70% of interior designers are buying more vintage today than a year ago

“Design enthusiasts have come to appreciate the practical, environmental, and elegant benefits of antique furnishings,” said Anna Brockway, Co-Founder and President of Chairish. “Vine has proven to be the antidote to the supply chain and rising inflation rates.”

Chairish, the leading online destination for stylish and unique home furnishings, today announced the results of its annual survey of interior designers. With over 2,000 respondents, survey results indicate a transformational shift in designers’ buying habits toward vintage home furnishing.

Seventy percent of designers surveyed said they buy more vintage products today than they did at the same time in 2021. The popularity of antique products has soared in the past year as 98% of designers have used antique furniture and art in their projects, according to the survey. Of particular note is the insatiable antique habit among designers in the southeastern United States, with 80% of local designers reporting that they buy more antiques today than they did last year. This is a particularly poignant trend in light of the population growth that has occurred in the region over the past two years.

The designers also revealed that 45% of a typical residential design project budget (average range of $270,000) now goes toward antique furnishings and decor.

Demand for antique furniture is booming for practical reasons, including vintage’s immunity to current supply chain problems and inflationary pressure, sustainability benefits, and the elegant appeal of unique pieces. Designers report that by using the classic style, they can offer their clients a unique look that is not replicated elsewhere and do it on time and within budget.

When asked why they shop for wine instead of freshly made:

  • 90% of designers crave vintage because classic design “makes the space more dynamic and multi-dimensional”
  • 60% of designers agreed that classic style is “the cutest on the planet”
  • Over 50% of designers prefer instant liquor availability and shorter delivery times

“I always start with luxury in my designs and build from there,” said Zoe Feldman, Washington, D.C.-based interior designer. “Buying pieces of the past that can never be reinvented and unique is special, sustainable, and serendipitous.”

In 2020, supply chain issues in the broader home sector slowed the manufacture and delivery of new goods and delays continued until 2022. With their manufacturing already in place, older goods have not experienced these delays. In addition, consumers today are facing inflation that has reached its highest level in four decades. While the prices of newly made goods have increased significantly, the prices of old goods have remained steady, providing a much-needed refuge from inflationary prices.

“Design enthusiasts have come to appreciate the practical, environmental, and elegant benefits of antique furnishings,” said Anna Brockway, Co-Founder and President of Chairish. “Vintage has proven to be the elegant antidote to the supply chain and rising inflation rates affecting the home furnishings industry today.”

Survey respondents rated Chairish as the best source for home furnishings and arts, receiving the highest score of any supplier in the past five years. Chairish is also accelerating faster in favor of competitors including other markets, design centers, industry events and social media.
