Gujarat: Brick made in Gujarat has become a star attraction in the homes of Bollywood celebrities | Ahmedabad news

Ahmedabad: Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan’s weekend villa in Khandala has Gujarat designed bricks made in Amdavad. The vacation home in Roshan, 22,400 square feet, was designed by architect Gregoria Okonomo.
Speaking to TOI, Oikonomou said, “We wanted a unique texture, durability and color for the exterior bricks for this holiday home project in Hrithik. They were sourced from Ahmedabad. We used over 30,000 bricks made in Gujarat for this project.” She added that the Gujarat-designed bricks are being used in many other notable projects as well.
Capitalizing on the growing trend of designer homes, the construction brick manufacturers in Gujarat have upped their game by producing thousands of types of designer raised bricks that lend a certain appeal to the homes of celebrities.
Ahmedabad-based Harihar Bricks and Godhra-based Jay Jalaram Bricks, whose soaring bricks decorate Roshan’s weekend home and actor Surveen Chawla’s Mumbai residence, said Gujarat is emerging as a hub for designer exposed bricks. Hemal Prajapati, owner of Harihar Bricks said, “Besides supplying famous architects from Mumbai, Delhi and other parts of the country, we have registered a huge rise in orders from European countries as well.”
The company also recently supplied bricks for the construction of the Swaminarayan Temple in Abu Dhabi, UAE. In fact, the Middle East and Europe have emerged as the largest export markets for brick makers in Gujarat, whose wares are used in the construction of famous buildings. Australia is also a slowly emerging export market for brick manufacturers here.
Nisarj Prajapati, promoter of Jay Brahmani Brick Works said, “We manufacture hand-made, machined and pressed bricks, so far we are catering to the local demand but now we have started exporting to the Middle East, Europe and the US. There is a huge demand for height bricks for bungalows and upscale buildings. Gujarat is emerging as a reliable supplier Due to the easy availability of raw materials and cheap labor cost.”
Gujarat is home to at least 1,200 top brick manufacturers who manufacture at least 400 crore bricks annually, according to the Gujarat Brick Manufacturers Association (GBMF) estimates. Of those, barely 10 players produce height bricks.
Although the brick industry in the state lags far behind states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Punjab, diversification into the upland brick industry gives local players an edge over their peers.
Gujarat manufacturers are now proposing to other players in Punjab and Haryana a chance for their money in the sector, according to industry sources. Whereas normal masonry bricks are priced around Rs 7-8, exposed bricks cost around Rs 15. “Local players in the upper and exposed part of the bricks have been able to get better prices and penetrate the niche markets. The bricks help conserve heat,” said Mahendra Prajapati, GBMF Secretary.
