How to make your home feel like a luxury hotel

As the saying goes, there is no place like home, but there is definitely something incomparable about putting your feet up in a luxury hotel while you’re travelling. From classy sheets to chic design elements to signature scents, upscale hotel elements can be tempting to blend into your space after you reboot your hotel switch. And I’ve noticed many hotels, they’re offering their signature merchandise for sale to help you relive the experience.

To create an elegant interior reminiscent of a warm and inviting hotel, focus on incorporating natural elements into the space and adding touches that make it feel comfortable for you and your guests.

“Start with a neutral color palette as a baseline, and layer with contrasting colors and textures,” says interior designer Megan Kelly of Stonehill Taylor Architecture and Interior Design. “Be bold enough to mix the materials, but layer them thoughtfully to provide just enough contrast so the space is still cohesive, but also vibrant.” This way not only will your guests be with the charming space you created, but as a homeowner, you’ll continue to cherish the pieces you’ve carefully chosen to provide warmth and vibrancy, she says. Stonehill Taylor has just completed an impressive renovation of prime Limelight Hotel property in the heart of downtown Aspen – a gorgeous mountainside retreat with no shortage of bespoke design elements at every turn (and an on-site boutique selling some merchandise from their suites).

Below, Kelly shares her tips and tricks for remodeling a gorgeous hotel like Limelight by adding a few key elements to your space.

Easy design tips to make your home look like a luxury hotel

    Give priority to the fireplace

The staple of any living room? A fireplace adds to the feel of a warm and inviting place. “A home’s living room offers the opportunity to be playful and bold,” says Kelly. “The space is not only to be livable for the homeowner, but also to entertain family and friends.” The classic fireplace sets the stage for more colorful accessories surrounding it.

    accessory with lighting

Kelly says lighting plays a major role in how a space works and feels. “Bring in multiple types of lighting fixtures to allow lighting levels to be configured to adapt to current needs.” This Antler chandelier adds a mountainous vibe reminiscent of an elegant ski chalet while keeping the room feeling warm and inviting.

Focus on choosing detailed pieces that add something unique

Once you set the stage in neutral colors, you can spray custom pieces to personalize the space. “[In the living room] There is more freedom in choosing bolder colours, patterns, shapes and textures. Explore and choose bespoke pieces and make them the focal point. These features can be as simple as adding a sculpted insert, a contrasting accent pillow, or plush faux-fur throws draped along a neutral sofa, “”Maybe the statement is grander like a petrified wood coffee table.”

    Spray with custom touches

Add a personal touch to a room by incorporating a piece from your travels to remind you of the epic experience you had. It can also be a great conversation starter while entertaining guests.

    Add pops of color

“Using warm woody tones like white oak and walnut allows a neutral baseline for brighter colors like coral and red to be the hallmarks,” says Kelly. “These features can include a patterned bed throw, abstract artwork, or quirky colorful accessories.” At the Limelight Hotel in Aspen, cozy white linens are accented with a pop of color across this elegant red throw pillow.

Decorate your walls with unique art

Unique art helps personalize your space and add an element of nostalgia. A vintage-inspired picture or other decorative piece adds a cozy element to your living room or bedroom.

    Remember that comfort is key

“Comfort can start with bedding materials, using high-quality bed linens and pillows,” Kelly says. Add a level of comfort and luxury with this high-quality satin sheet set that you’ll melt in at the end of a long day and voila – you’ll feel like you’re having a 5-star experience every evening, sans 5-star prices.
