Your home should be warm and livable, but one interior designer claims that the biggest comforts in your home can be unsightly for visitors.
Homeowners faced the judgment of the professionals in a video that revealed the 6 common things in homes that make them look cheap.
Krishnan Rajaratnam is the mind behind Interior by Krish, a UK-based interior design service that provides home décor advice on its popular TikTok account.
In a video posted on his design page, Rajaratnam shared common home design options that can make your home look “cheap” — although not every commenter agrees with his judgments.
Convertible washing machines were first on the list. Rajaratnam used a photo of a front loading washing machine visible between cabinets in the kitchen.
Another ugly in the kitchen the designer warned about is fridge clutter, including magnets, notifications, reminders, and miscellaneous artwork.
Two amazing things on the list may seem like they add a level of luxury at first but actually detract from the aesthetic of your home: crushed velvet furniture and roller blinds.
Rajaratnam argued that posters, such as those with cartoons or “Laugh Live” style slogans, look cheap on any wall in the house.
Finally, white plastic showers aren’t as luxurious as their metal counterparts, no matter how easy the lightweight materials may be.
Some commentators planned to jot down expert advice, but others were confused by the remedies for design sins.
“Not sure where else we should put the washing machine,” one person wrote. They also joked, “Maybe they’re hiding it behind a roller blind?”
Rajaratnam recommended hiding the washing machine behind a door made of the same material as the kitchen cabinets.
Others in the comments who didn’t have space for full laundry rooms said they stashed their washing machines in their bathrooms.
A few commenters have pointed out how common many unattractive décor options are.
One of the women said, “The only thing I don’t have is the smashed velvet furniture.”
Another joked, “None of that. Avo, I can sleep at night now.”
The most controversial item on the list was fridge clutter, which drew a strong response from parents who love displaying their children’s artwork on their fridges.
One viewer wrote: “Every country I visit I buy a magnet.” “Don’t bother if you’re cheap.”
Although a number of viewers have expressed their dissatisfaction with the idea of renovating the house, Rajaratnam is confident that replacing the “cheap” items is paying off.
“You can still make the family home look like a show house,” the designer wrote.
