Indy 500 Décor, community initiatives welcome racing enthusiasts home again in May

Hoosiers who live all over central Indiana and visitors to downtown Indianapolis need to take one look around to realize: It’s time to come home again.

Stunning visuals along with messages centered around this year’s “Home Again” marketing campaign cover central Indiana to help revitalize the local community and Hoosiers at the heart of the 106th Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge on Sunday, May 29.

The signs installed this week include renaming the streets of downtown Indianapolis after the star drivers of the NTT INDYCAR series and the takeover of the JW Marriott. This year’s Indy 500 logo on the front of the skyscraper is 127 feet high and 118 feet wide, while the “Back Home Again” logo written along the north side of the building is 206 feet high.

“One of the most important lessons we’ve learned here at Indianapolis Motor Speedway over the past two years is that the Indy 500 is nothing without its incredible fans and passionate community who support this race in ways that no other sports organization has experienced,” IMS President J. Douglas Bowles. “I am proud to be proud of our outstanding hospitality at Hoosier and to work with so many community partners to deliver fun, exciting and meaningful events and programs that attract racing enthusiasts and support organizations that help our community thrive.”

In addition, Indy Wings murals will return to Indianapolis neighborhoods to provide photo opportunities worthy of fans, pedestrians, and business customers. Multiple murals will be displayed around downtown Indianapolis, Main Street at Speedway, Clay Terrace Mall, Noblesville, and Westfield.

These visuals bringing the distinctive Hoosier generosity of Indianapolis on display to racing enthusiasts from all over the world are just one aspect of the first strong community focus driving “the greatest spectacle of racing.”

After a widely successful campaign in 2021, 500 Spectacle of Homes returns in 2022 to encourage racing enthusiasts to decorate their yard or home in a race-themed manner, host a fun balcony party and show their incredible civic pride that runs deep in all Hoosiers. This initiative works in tandem with the Harrison Center for the Arts as balcony parties have become an integral part of 500 Spectacle of Homes. The first balcony party of the year will be held on Friday, May 6 at the Harrison Center.

This year’s month-long 500 Spectacle of Homes celebration culminates on Wednesday, May 25th in which lucky homes will be selected to receive a visit from NTT INDYCAR SERIES drivers. Selected homes will also be entered into a draw for a chance to ride on the IMS platform at the AES 500 Festival Parade on Saturday, May 28. Race enthusiasts must register their home to participate at IMS.com/Spectacle.

New this year, IMS will be the site of a naturalization ceremony Tuesday, May 17, which is also the opening day of training for the Indianapolis 500. In honor of the 500-mile race, 33 individuals from around the world will be inducted as US citizens into the Racing Capital of the World in an event that is the first of its kind in IMS. The event will take place at the Pagoda Plaza and is open to the public for those attending the practice.

IMS has also expanded its incredibly successful bike to the 500 initiative in collaboration with Bike Indianapolis to provide fans with a safe and healthy ride to the Speedway at Indy 500 Race Day. New this year, Race Day at AMP begins at 16 Tech and follows a police escort to the racetrack. Bike expands to 500 as well to allow bikes to be parked at IMS throughout the month. To secure a place in line on race day, May 29, cyclists must pre-register here.
