Celebrity Cruises CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, Celebrity Cruises Managing Director Joe Rzymowska and Captain Kate McCue led a press conference and highlighted how gender equality on board has improved significantly under Lutoff-Perlo’s leadership.
The Captain Mackie Causeway employs 70% of women, which is an impressive statistic considering that only 2% of seafarers globally are women. Captain McCoy is the first woman to take a new ship from a shipyard in the world.
“Gender equality is important,” Lotof-Pirlo said. “Since I took office in 2014, I’ve tried to correct that balance. When I joined Celebrity Cruises, we had 5% women on our bridges, and today that number is 32%. To go from 5% To 32%, that’s the easy part, it’s the next percentage to get a full 50/50 credit that will be the hardest step. We’re making progress every day and recruiting talent from all over the world regardless of race or gender.”
Give her opinions on diversity on board Celebrities behindCaptain McCoy said: “We may not have crazy slides but what we do have are amazing crew members. Our crew comes from 72 different nationalities and each one comes with something very special. While the ship was amazing, it didn’t really come alive until our crew members walked aboard.” They brought their hearts out with their souls and I hope you will have the opportunity to meet them.”
Providing a regional perspective, Rzymowska said: “Last year we had an incredibly successful sailing season across the UK, with 40% of new passengers coming to Celebrity Cruises. In some ways, the pandemic has opened up a huge employment opportunity for us. The cruise industry often operates in a very aloof way, and so we focus on working with travel partners who truly understand us and what we are up to.”
Giving an outlook on the future and the broader recovery of the cruise industry, Lotof Pirlo said: “We made a pact that we only look through the windshield and not the rear-view mirror. If we don’t, we won’t move forward. I rarely fly on a plane. It’s not full now. The world and people in general are at a tipping point where COVID is in the rearview mirror and they want to go back to the way life is supposed to be. We see it shaping and affecting our business in 2022 and 2023 – and our outlook is very positive.”
