The most popular celebrities gave their separate endorsement of Vice President Lenny Robredo’s presidential candidacy at a massive rally on her 57th birthday on Saturday, prompting veteran political activist, Senator Franklin Drilon, to declare that “if the elections were held last night, we would win.”

Speaking to reporters in Iloilo City, the senator said the 412,000 turnout in Pasay City, the largest campaign to date, was an impressive show of strength, which he hopes will not yet be reflected in pre-election polls.

“It’s already been a major run, [spanning a] A few kilometers on the Macapagal, not only the number but the passion of the attendees. “It’s clear that they weren’t taken or bussed,” Drilon said.

During the rally, actors John Arquilla, Angel Locsin and Deputy Ganda gave the most enthusiastic speeches about why they had chosen to support Robredo.

“This is what true love for country looks like,” Arquilla said. “Stand up because we don’t want corruption or any form of injustice, because those two things are the reason why so many of us suffer.”

He said he chose Robredo “because of what you’ve done, what you’re doing and what you’re going to do.”

Meanwhile, emotional Locsin reminded Filipinos that they themselves will struggle every time they choose the wrong candidates.

“If we want change, let’s stop voting for political dynasties because our problems will be repeated over and over,” she said.

In every election, we come together to help a candidate win. Instead, we must help ourselves, our families and our country to win… We must be the winners, Deputy Ganda said.

“So my gift to the Filipino people is my vote for Lenny Robredo,” said the talk show host. This was the first time that Ganda’s deputy had come out publicly in support of Robredo.

Robredo, who turned 57 on that day, thanked the celebrity for “gambling on the Leni-Kiko tandem” even though they weren’t the current contestants in the poll.

Aside from the three actors, other celebrities who have expressed their support for Robredo were Gary Valenciano, Maricel Soriano, Uji Alcassid, his wife Régine Velasquez, Lisa Soberano, Catherine Bernardo and Daniel Padilla.

It was the energy of the crowd that made it different from the rallies of other candidates, Drilon said.

“The last time I saw it was in 1986. I have confidence that with all the difficulties, the will of the people will emerge and find its way when the people vote,” he said, referring to the mass demonstrations in 1986 that culminated in the Edsa Revolution.

Drilon also addressed criticism that Robredo’s campaign was elitist, saying the pivot to accepting all political colors and not just pink shows how receptive her camp was to comments.

Drilon said Robredo’s opponent, Manila Mayor Francisco Domagoso, was mistaken in accusing Robredo of bullying the other candidates to force them to withdraw.

I’ve never seen a nicer candidate than Lenny. She is very nice. This claim is unfounded. A perception is not a fact. INQ
