Our fitness expert focuses on the hottest spring fitness trends of the year

What are the fitness trends for this spring?

If you’re thinking about changing your workout routine in the spring, you’re likely looking for new exercises – and equipment – to help you reach your fitness goals.

BestReviews fitness expert Judd NeSmith, NASM-CPT, PES, founder of Serious Fitness, shares some of the season’s best fitness trends that are taking over parks, gyms, and even living rooms. From outdoor workouts to dynamic home gyms, NeSmith shows there’s something new for everyone this spring—no matter their age or fitness level.

The hottest fitness trends for spring 2022

    Health and fitness tracking

Health and fitness tracking through wearable technology has been on the rise in recent years, and this spring, it’s becoming one of the most popular investments. In particular, many people are upgrading to new fitness trackers and smartwatches. NeSmith says the Apple Watch is best for people interested in sleep tracking and that Fitbits are ideal for step counting.

However, they are not the only devices worth buying.

“I recommend wearing a heart rate monitor,” says NeSmith. “It will tell you your maximum heart rate and effective heart rate zones you need to be in so you can track your exertion.

    cardio training

Sales of cardio equipment have increased in the past two months. And with the advent of sophisticated consoles in these devices, NeSmith says people are willing to pay higher prices to get more stimulation during their workouts at home.

“Having an interactive computer screen in front of you that provides a simulation of running a central park, or riding a bike in San Francisco on a specific track — makes the workouts more interesting,” says NeSmith.

NeSmith says it’s not just pelotons that are getting a lot of attention, either. High-end ellipticals, treadmills, and stationary bikes from other major brands became hot items this spring. There are many popular models currently in late demand as well.

    Doing sports outdoors

While there has been a steady return to indoor workouts recently, NeSmith explains that commercial gyms have pivoted to accommodate an increasing number of members who are drawn to outdoor workouts.

“People like to be outside,” says Nesmith. “It’s much calmer and calmer, whether you’re doing an exercise class or following your own exercise program.”

Certain gyms and studios launched outpatient camps and clinics this spring, while others have brought in spin bikes outside for pop-up bike lessons. As the warmer spring weather approaches, more and more fitness centers are offering outdoor yoga and Pilates classes.

    body weight exercises

Strength training is easier than ever with online tutorials and personal training apps available and affordable. NeSmith says people not only learn how to exercise effectively, but reap the benefits of exercising efficiently by using the basics: a handful of bodyweight moves.

    • Squatting: According to NeSmith, squats “recruit the quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes. It’s really a great way to strengthen the lower body.”
    • Pressure alternatives: The chest muscles, triceps, deltoids, and front of the shoulder work, while the prone cobra poses target the middle of the upper back.
    • mannequin cobra: When you lie face down on the floor and squeeze with your chin bent, you aim for the middle of your upper back.

Just three days a week is enough to see and feel the difference in your body, Nesmith says. And between strength training days, light cardio and rest days are recommended.

    Other Spring Fitness Trends

NeSmith says that more and more people are “starting to discover how expensive it can be to outfit your gym with some really good equipment.” Some of the most popular equipment purchased this season include dumbbell sets, squat racks, medicine balls, and benches.

Other people gravitate towards the convenience of online personal training. According to NeSmith, the fitness industry “is now seeing it explode.” NeSmith is seeing the trend firsthand, considering that it is based in Boulder, Colorado and offers one-on-one training to clients across the county.

According to NeSmith, another spring fitness trend worth trying is high-intensity interval training. Also referred to as HIIT, it has become one of the most popular exercise classes in commercial gyms, and NeSmith says, “I support it 100%.”
