Shawmut Design and Construction celebrates its 40th anniversary

BOSTON – Shawmut Design and Construction celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2022.
Founded in 1982 as a small carpentry contractor with just a few employees, Shawmut has built a reputation for willingness to take on the most complex and challenging projects.

Now, with 11 offices nationwide—including New York, Los Angeles, and Boston—and more than 1,100 employees, the company remains true to its heritage by providing an unparalleled building experience that delivers technologically advanced projects with the highest level of craftsmanship.

“When we take on a project, it is more than just a structure – we create a part of the fabric of the city in which it is built,” said Les Hesco, CEO of Shawmut Design and Construction. Each project represents an investment in the community, and an opportunity to build a better tomorrow through superior structures, improved communities, and engagement. This comprehensive approach and appreciation for the work we do has allowed us to be an industry leader for 40 years.”

In recent years, the company has taken deliberate steps to prepare for a robust growth path driven by the exponential increase in market share of projects of great scope and complexity. This 10-year growth plan involves assembling a team of skilled large-scale project builders; Add expertise in the commerce, education, healthcare, and life sciences sectors nationwide with a strong focus on New York and Southern California; and an office opening in West Palm Beach, Florida, to meet strong demand for commercial space.

Shawmut’s signature large projects include the InterContinental New York Barclay and Park Avenue Synagogue in New York, Soho Warehouse and UCLA Nimoy Theater in Los Angeles, Boynton Yards for Life Sciences Development and UMass Chan Medical School in Massachusetts. In addition to working on a large scale, the company continues to partner with new and permanent clients to successfully deliver projects of any size.

“As a real estate investor, developer and owner project manager, I understand the importance of working with a great construction partner who exceeds expectations and values our long-term relationship,” said Rob Dickey, executive vice president of Leggat McCall Properties. “For 30 years and millions of square feet, LMP and Shawmut have successfully delivered projects across the commercial, educational, healthcare and cultural sectors – culminating today with large-scale transformational developments in the life sciences. Shawmut continues to provide us with the quality people and teams we demand and the expertise we trust. We look to the future as Shawmut sets its sights on the next four decades of growth.”

The company’s growth is attributed to its 100% employee-owned, people-first culture, and the belief that when people bring their best at work, they deliver the best building experience to customers. Marianne Monti, recently promoted to the newly created position as Head of Administration and Personnel, joins Hesco and Chief Operating Officer Redha Amir Khalili in their commitment to driving an innovative talent-driven culture to support future growth. Three years ago, it was incorporated and is now constantly working to maintain 100% equity in wages and promotion company-wide. Since its inception, the company has remained dedicated to the health, safety and overall wellbeing of every employee.

“I am very proud of the commitment Shawmut has made to promoting an environment in which anyone from any background can thrive and do their job to the fullest,” Monty said. “This is not just a superficial attempt to address a hot topic; it is an ongoing effort and ethos woven into our corporate culture over the past 40 years.”
