Slim Aarons ‘Poolside Gossip’ home in Palm Springs sells for record $13.06 million

A Modernist Palm Springs home featured in “Poolside Gossip,” a famous 1970 photo by Slim Aarons, has sold off the market for $13.06 million, according to listing agent Gerard Bisignano for Vista Sotheby’s International Realty.

Bisignano said the deal sets a record for Palm Springs. Mr. Bisignano, who also represented the buyer, said the home, designed by architect Richard Neutra, had recently requested $16.95 million after first listing for $25 million in October 2020. He declined to identify the buyer but said he was a European businessman with a “deep and rich appreciation.” for modernist architecture.

The seller was Brent R Harris, a former managing director of California-based Pacific Investment Management Company, who bought the property in the 1990s. The property was also owned by “Copacabana” singer Barry Manilow and the late Eugene Klein, owner of the San Diego Chargers. When Mr. Aarons photographed the house, it was owned by community member Nelda Linske, who is also featured in the photo.

The five-bedroom, approximately 3,200-square-foot home was built in 1946 for American businessman Edgar J. Kaufman Sr., who was also the original owner of Fallingwater, the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home circa 1935 in Pennsylvania.

Mr. Bisignano said Mr. Harris gave the Palm Springs home a five-year restoration when he first purchased it, removing alterations to reveal original materials, and replacing sections of the house using original fabricators and craftsmen. Mr Bisignano said Mr Harris had also completed the latest renovation.

He said that the house has guest and service suites and a master bedroom branching off from a central living and dining room. The approximately 3 acre property includes a swimming pool, pool pavilion and tennis court.

Mr. Harris sold because he felt it was time to transfer ownership to someone else, Mr. Bisignano said.

The previous record in Palm Springs was the previous record for comedian Bob Hope, which sold for $13 million in 2016, Mr. Bisignano said. Luxury single family homes in the greater Palm Springs area sold twice as fast in March as they sold at the same time last year, for 22% more per square foot, according to the Luxury Home Marketing Institute.
