Story Street Studio creates a cozy and colorful family home in Westchester, New York

After moving out of their Brooklyn apartment, Alexandra Wilkie and Zachary Basanen moved into a luxurious 3,359-square-foot home in Westchester, New York, before the birth of their first daughter, Rosie. The professional designer had previously owned the Bronxville home, so his interiors have already been beautifully assembled. But the couple wanted to make it their own, so they asked Next Wave’s Story Street Studio honorees Laura Stanley and Lizzie Bailey to customize it for their family—which, of course, called for making it kid-friendly.

For Rosie, the design duo created a dreamy room full of models they describe as “delightful, layered, and detailed.” And when the couple’s second daughter, Etta, was born, the couple used them once again to turn their bedroom into a nursery.

Since the 1922 colonial-style home provided a strong formal foundation, there was no need for extensive architectural changes or structural alterations. “It was a fun challenge working with what was already there and creating something completely new and fresh that better suited our clients’ style,” the designers noted. By pairing boldly printed textiles with the clients’ vast art collection, they create layered décor, adding new-sourced furniture and lighting for vintage and antique finds.

The cozy living room embodies the clients’ love for colors and textiles. Beautiful blue grass cloth wallpapers were already there, but Stanley and Bailey added complementary colors and rich textures to create a fresh but comfortable space. Drawing from the couple’s love of cosmopolitan textiles, including the rich Chinoiserie Schumacher eggplant curtain fabric and a custom rug design based on antique Swedish design, the designers created a light-filled space for the whole family to enjoy.

The designers explain that “the office has a lot of windows and not a lot of walls, so pasting the ceiling and even the sconce allows us to get more of that style—our favorite and client—into the space.” They note that the nasturtium vine’s shape “brings in the outdoors and makes you feel as if the garden behind you has crept in and surrounded you.”
