The port sweat returns to spring and summer fitness

“It’s a great show for the community here at the harbor and across Boston as well.”

As coats and layers emerge for warmer weather, Seaport Sweat, Boston’s largest free outdoor exercise chain, is back to help people get outdoors and get in shape.

Now in its seventh season, the Seaport Sweat will bring nearly 200 classes to the Boston Seaport area, May 2 through September 29, but it’s not only the city’s largest free outdoor workout series in terms of class count, but also by attendance.

“Up until last year we averaged about 100 per class,” said Claire Kilcullen, assistant director of marketing for events at WS Development, which operates the Seaport District. “We hope to go back to the pre-COVID numbers this year, which were around 200 [during the week] to about 300 on Saturday, which is the busiest season. We hope to have 400 attendees this year.”

Held on Seaport Common, located between Seaport Boulevard and Northern Avenue, space is not an issue, Kilcoln said: “We usually teach one aspect of the common, but we can teach entirely if we need to.

“It’s a great show for the community here in the harbor and across Boston as well,” she added.

Kilcullen does not sit at a desk and simply organizes. I actually attended classes with every teacher booked for the series in order to create a balanced and varied program. Then, like most people, she honestly maintains a fitness routine and attends joint classes: “I try to go to at least one of every class,” Kilcullen said.

Although registration is encouraged, classes require little more than attendance by attendees.

“Our coaches are excited about getting into fitness,” Kilcullen said. “None of our classes need equipment, but if you have a yoga mat, you’re welcome to bring it.”

She emphasized that the Seaport Sweat is all inclusive and caters to any gender.

She laughed, “It’s funny to see businessmen in their suits and construction workers walking by and they’re going to stop and hit in a yoga pose or two.”

DJ Sprino from Boston will spin each class, turning the music up or down at a pace to match the pace, which ranges from Peaches Guaranteed with Rob Velasquez—bank on leaving with lower body pain, Kilcullen advised—to Mindful Warrior Yoga with Edwin Frias. “This is more meditative, very zen,” she said.

One of the most popular classes is Zumba with Nicole Derosiers. “This is a special event on a Thursday night,” Kilcoln said. “You can enjoy your dance and then have drinks in the neighbourhood.”

“We’re looking forward to getting back to that sense of community,” Kilcoln said. “We did some virtual classes and then some mixed and in-person virtual classes. But we welcome enjoying time together. Outdoor fitness classes are still more popular, even with different levels of comfort for people. It’s another great way to enjoy summer.”
