20 estheticians and makeup artists on how to prep celebrity skin at the 2022 Met Gala

    As we spend the week unpacking the fashion and beauty looks on the red carpet, one major beauty question at the Met Gala is on our minds: How can the experts really make these stars’ skin look so good?

    “I’ve always had a style where I emphasize skincare as an integral part of my makeup ritual for myself and others,” says makeup artist Gucci Westman, who worked with Emily Ratajkowski overnight.     With so many risks involved in getting the sparkle right, it should come as no surprise that the routine begins days before the party. A session with celebrity facialist Toska Husted might include sculpting, lifting, and toning, while time with Iván Pol might showcase his rejuvenating treatment of Tour de Force (as he did on Katy Perry) or his infamous Triple Threat treatment that focuses on the eyes, eyebrows, and jawline.

    As for what not To do before a big event? Professionals advise against invasive or harsh treatments like extractions, micro-needling and exfoliation, and instead tend to create definition, radiance and enhance natural beauty.     Paul was behind Kris Jenner’s royal brilliance from within.     Before applying Maude Apatow’s classic glitter, makeup artist Kelsey Deenihan looked at Skinfix to prep the actor’s complexion. “I gently pressed the Skinfix Barrier + Triple Lipid-Boost 360-degree eye barrier under her eyes to make sure the concealer wouldn’t smudge or crease,” she says. Before applying makeup, I applied the Eye Brightening Vitamin K Complex to add “a touch of radiance to the under-eye area,” even under concealer. Then, after setting Moritz’s look with powder, she sprayed a lavender-and-honey balancing mist to “help the makeup melt into the skin and achieve a dewy, balanced look.”

    Makeup artist Rachel Goodwin headed to skincare at Deer Mastery for Emma Stone’s prep, saying the brand “quickly became the best way to treat my clients’ skin before applying makeup.” While the hyaluronic acid-infused gel serum delivers lightweight, plumping hydration to the face, the squalene-based oil delivers a photo-ready glow to Stone’s arms and legs.

    Beloved rapper Jack Harlow has documented on social media nanny Fitch Lunar for his appearance at the Met Gala.     “I like to draw on complexion and enhance the complexion with makeup rather than a heavy foundation mask, and recreate the glow or contour the face, so the CurrentBody mask is one of the tools I always use with my frequent clients,” explains makeup artist Matin Mulawizada, who has worked with Olivia De Jung at the Met Gala. “She’s been using the mask for a few weeks already and today we’ve used it again to keep up with her previous skincare routine.”
