As we spend the week unpacking the fashion and beauty looks on the red carpet, one major beauty question at the Met Gala is on our minds: How can the experts really make these stars’ skin look so good?
“I’ve always had a style where I emphasize skincare as an integral part of my makeup ritual for myself and others,” says makeup artist Gucci Westman, who worked with Emily Ratajkowski overnight. Vogue magazine. “You’re putting on the entirety of makeup, if you will. When you take the time to [perfect the skin]It makes a huge difference to your overall appearance.”

With so many risks involved in getting the sparkle right, it should come as no surprise that the routine begins days before the party. A session with celebrity facialist Toska Husted might include sculpting, lifting, and toning, while time with Iván Pol might showcase his rejuvenating treatment of Tour de Force (as he did on Katy Perry) or his infamous Triple Threat treatment that focuses on the eyes, eyebrows, and jawline.
As for what not To do before a big event? Professionals advise against invasive or harsh treatments like extractions, micro-needling and exfoliation, and instead tend to create definition, radiance and enhance natural beauty. Here, 20 facialists and makeup artists guide us on how to prep the skin of celebrity clients for fashion’s biggest night.
Evan Bol
Paul was behind Kris Jenner’s royal brilliance from within. After his signature treatment, “I applied the No. 1 de Chanel Revitalising Serum to the skin and infused natural ingredients derived from the red camellia flower to enhance radiance. So her complexion can look almost golden,” he explains. Then he followed it up with No. 1 de Chanel Revitalizing Cream and what he calls his secret sauce: “a skin enhancer infused with golden sandalwood to give skin an even more gilded appearance.”
Gucci Westman

Joanna Vargas
Joanna Vargas, a celebrity facialist who worked with Vanessa Hudgens and Laurie Harvey before the ceremony, focuses not only on custom skincare procedures, but also on a range of in-office treatments. Think: microcurrent, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and a full-body LED light bed. Tosca Hasted
Husted, who treated Karlie Kloss and Khloe Kardashian, started his sessions with an enzymatic cleanser, like Auteur’s Definitive Enzyme Cleanser, followed by a gentle milky cleanser. Then, after epilating, contouring, and a cocktail of serums, I relied on Biologique Recherche Masque PIGM 400 to boost radiance.
Vincent Oquendo
Professional makeup artist Vincent Oquendo relies on FaceGym beauty tools to prep the skin. To release a face lift for Daisy Edgar-Jones, use the FaceGym Face Ball along with Multi-Sculpt contouring gua sha. “It helps eliminate puffiness and drain any remaining tension and adds great definition to the face.”
Mario Dedivanovic
Mario Dedivanovic perfected Kim Kardashian’s makeup with the help of Augustinus Bader’s collection. Besides the brand’s cream, use a few drops of facial oil around the cheekbones and brow bones “for extra moisture and dewy.”
Kelsey Deenihan
Before applying Maude Apatow’s classic glitter, makeup artist Kelsey Deenihan looked at Skinfix to prep the actor’s complexion. “I gently pressed the Skinfix Barrier + Triple Lipid-Boost 360-degree eye barrier under her eyes to make sure the concealer wouldn’t smudge or crease,” she says. Then she chose Repair Balm for “extra hydration and for setting lipstick”—the key to those eye-catching long, red lips.

Makeup artist May Queen worked with Chloe Grace Moretz for the evening. “By using Naturopathica’s glow-inducing skincare before and after applying makeup, I was able to bring out Chlo’s already radiant complexion to create the perfect canvas for her red carpet look,” says Quynh. Before applying makeup, I applied the Eye Brightening Vitamin K Complex to add “a touch of radiance to the under-eye area,” even under concealer. Then, after setting Moritz’s look with powder, she sprayed a lavender-and-honey balancing mist to “help the makeup melt into the skin and achieve a dewy, balanced look.”
Rachel Goodwin
Makeup artist Rachel Goodwin headed to skincare at Deer Mastery for Emma Stone’s prep, saying the brand “quickly became the best way to treat my clients’ skin before applying makeup.” While the hyaluronic acid-infused gel serum delivers lightweight, plumping hydration to the face, the squalene-based oil delivers a photo-ready glow to Stone’s arms and legs.
Fitch lunar
Beloved rapper Jack Harlow has documented on social media nanny Fitch Lunar for his appearance at the Met Gala. Lunar started their session with TheraFace Pro, using the cleansing attachment, then moved on to LED and Percussive technology to “relieve any facial tension.” Then count on a cocktail of Murad’s products – notably Correct & Protect SPF to moisturize and protect.

Makeup artist Lizzo Alexx Mayo relied on the Dermaflash Luxe to carefully plan the musical preparation for the Met Gala. “I like to start with clean, dry skin and use the lowest setting. I use gentle downward strokes to remove any peach fuzz and dead skin on the surface.”

“I like to draw on complexion and enhance the complexion with makeup rather than a heavy foundation mask, and recreate the glow or contour the face, so the CurrentBody mask is one of the tools I always use with my frequent clients,” explains makeup artist Matin Mulawizada, who has worked with Olivia De Jung at the Met Gala. “She’s been using the mask for a few weeks already and today we’ve used it again to keep up with her previous skincare routine.”
