Summer brings fun and fun, but also scorching sunshine and scorching heat. Sure, staying home is the easy way out, but we also want to enjoy the season! Design Attic founders Dhvani Bhatiya and Rhea Jacob Eapen share some of the easiest ways to incorporate brightness into your home’s décor while keeping the temperature down.

Your walls reflect and radiate maximum light and heat, so choose more mild tones to keep your home cool. You can choose neutral tones or classic white. You can also choose lighter tones of heavy colors such as soft gray, beige, powdery pink or aqua, depending on the color of the palate. If a solid heavy color must be incorporated, you can place it on one accent wall rather than across the room to keep it light, both in appearance and in heat.

    lighter fabrics

Whether it’s for any season or space, plants add life to a room like no other. With their natural color, plants add liveliness to the space, and you can also lift the mood depending on your choice of planters. Don’t forget that plants improve air quality!

    big windows

We now know that you can’t do much about the architecture or facades of your building, but the truth is that large windows can help keep rooms well ventilated. So, no matter your reason for hanging out, open your windows at the appropriate times of the day to take advantage of the sunlight while avoiding the harsh UV rays. Also avoid placing heavy furniture around windows to enhance ventilation.

    • Use transparent materials to block out unnecessary light and heat and keep the room cool. Note that the sunlight between 12 noon and 4 pm is very scorching and is sure to make your space crowded.
    • If the sun is totally hurting you, you can go the old school route and opt for cane curtains. These blinds completely block out the sun’s rays, helping to lower the temperature inside. These don’t create a complete opacity but lighten the mood a bit.
    • Choose dark solid curtains to ensure cool temperatures in your space. These will keep the heat away and can be adjusted to bring in the amount of light you wish to let in. Many choose blackout blinds to completely block out all the light from outside.
