Remodeling your home on a budget can be challenging, but with a little professional knowledge, it is totally possible.
And with enough experience, you can upgrade your home for free with smart hacks that take advantage of the things you already own.
The interior design professionals at BobVila.com have shared their strategies for remodeling your spaces on a tight budget.
Before you head to the hardware store, try these three methods for improving your home.
Remaining use
If there are places in your home that could benefit from an update, remember that a small accent can make a big difference.
With this in mind, head to your unwanted garage, closet, or closet and find leftover materials from previous projects.
The pros at Bob Vila write, “If you have paint leftover from your last DIY project, consider using it to spruce up a piece of generic or vintage furniture.”
If you have a bright or pastel color, you can even add a statement border for a more muted piece.
Discover some fabric paint, and you can also add stenciled designs to tablecloths, lampshades, rugs, and cushion covers.
Speaking of pillows, apply a similar trick to update your pillows for any season.
Repurpose the fabric into new pillowcases: You can tie a scarf around your favorite chair throw, sew together old T-shirts, or glue together fabric scraps from an old sewing project.
Using fabric from throughout your home will have the added benefit of creating a look that truly matches your personal style.
“You’ll end up with pops of unique color and patterns that you won’t find in your standard home store,” the experts said.
Rework things
If you have a gallery wall in your home, the easiest way to revamp your space is to change the artwork.
Of course, there are ways to go further than that. Repaint your frames, or even change the mats behind the pictures, and swap out plain white for a polished, muted tone.
Try making posters with family photos to display different life events, add event tickets and souvenirs.
And if you’ve kept small, flat items for “scrapbooks” that never came to fruition, consider framing them instead.
The professionals wrote: “You can frame anything that speaks to you, be it a calendar, a typographical print, or a quote.”
Add a natural texture
Enter the exterior and add natural elements to your home for a modern update.
The plant-filled house is especially popular right now, and if you add rustic “cottagkur” elements, you’ll get Instagram inspiration at no cost.
“Herbs, branches, pods, and flowers can be turned into wreaths, hooks, or decorative fillers for centerpieces or vases,” the experts say.
Fill a woven basket with dried flowers for a display arrangement with bohemian vibes, or display an array of shells and stones on a mirrored tray.
You can also combine all of your information to create a batch of bud vases from bottles that would otherwise have been sent to a recycling center.
Unite a mismatched bottle collection by adding paint to the interior—together, they’ll make a color statement in any room,” the experts wrote.
