This Apple Watch band revamps how you track your fitness goals

Apple Watch is the most popular fitness tracker. From tracking your runs and rides, to setting goals, to the dash of excitement finishing your loops, this smart wearable device has had a real impact on how we all work.

But what if you could unlock more? What if your Apple Watch could read the secrets of your body composition?

The all-new Aura Strap 2 could be the key you need to take a fresh look at tracking health and wellness data. Using bioimpedance analysis (BIA), this accessory band is the only wearable that provides fat, muscle, and hydration measurements for the Apple Watch. Here’s what we know about this redesigned band that’s meant to help you reach peak fitness.

The Aura 2 is a smart scale for your wrist

Being 20 percent thinner and 5 percent narrower than the original version, the Aura 2 strap works by touching the heel of your palm to the electrodes on the back of the bracelet and waiting for 30 seconds. The BIA sensors then send a weak electrical current through your body to calculate body fat, muscle mass, minerals, and water. According to Aura, the redesigned architecture captures 16 times more data points than the original device, improving accuracy to 95 percent of DEXA scanning – the gold standard for BIA measurement.

Measurements can be viewed in the Bluetooth-connected Aura app, where you can view your Bioimpedance Vector Analysis (BIVA) maps for an informative scoping of your personal body composition, hydration, and fitness progress. You can also set fitness goals within the app and monitor your progress during training and diet towards your desired self.

Do you want to use the Apple Health app? Aura Strap 2 also fully syncs with Apple’s HealthKit, keeping all your data neatly organized in one place.

Add more to your workout with the new Aura Plus app

To really take advantage of all that Aura has to offer, the brand has also unveiled a subscription-based app, Aura Plus. In addition to body composition measurements, goal tracking, and other content in the free version, Aura Plus gives you even more in-depth analysis via your personal BIVA map as well as monthly wellness reports. A subscription — $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year — gives you personalized recommendations to maximize your fitness journey, plus access to Aura’s library of workout plans and videos.

Depending on the brand, the Aura Plus will also let you chat face-to-face with a certified sports doctor or personal trainer. However, this bonus feature is not yet published so we will have to wait and see how useful it really is. For now, we think we’ll take advantage of the six-month free subscription, but the free version seems to provide enough for the average user once the trial period is over.

Aura Strap 2 specs and price:

The Aura redesigned band is now available in a single black color in two sizes for Apple Watches 38/40/41mm and 42/44/45mm. Band 2 works with any Apple Watch Series 3 or later, and is currently only compatible with iOS. Unlike the previous version, the Aura Strap 2 uses a rubber band, similar to Apple’s Solo Loop instead of clip mechanisms.

At under $150, it’s not the most expensive Apple Watch band, but it certainly offers more than just upgraded aesthetics. While we’re not completely sold out on the subscription-based app yet, it looks like the Aura Strap 2 is an accessory you don’t want to miss. Perhaps, even, a nice companion in the upcoming 8 series.
