Wyze Light Strip Review: Easy, Customizable Color LED Lights Starting at $20

The color changing Wyze Light Strip is easy to recommend. It’s only $20 for the basic 16-foot version, it’s easy to set up and offers plenty of features. Some options include control via the Wyze app or Alexa or Google Assistant Voice commands, timers, scenes, vacation mode, wake/sleep feature, and the ability to sync lights with music.

All of these things combined make the Wyze Light Strip an excellent overall value. The Wyze light bar feels a little shaky, which is something you’ll want to consider if you expect to move your light bar rather than leaving it in one place. In addition, it can only display one color at a time, compared to Wyze’s Light Strip Pro, which can display 16 different colors on the same strip at once.

However, this light strip is worth considering if you want to upgrade your home décor with simple and customizable color LED lights at a great price.

Wyze Light Strips come in two sizes: 16.4 feet for $20 and 32.8 feet for $36. Wyze also makes a premium LED light strip called the Wyze Light Strip Pro, which is currently out of stock. The Pro version comes in the same two size options, but costs $31 and $45, respectively. It has additional options for changing color and an epoxy coating that is supposed to improve durability. I haven’t tested this model yet, but I’ll take a look at it when it’s available again.

Your Wyze Light Strip purchase includes LED light strip, controller, power adapter, and 10 sticky clips. I detail how to set up Wyze Light Strip in this article, so we’ll skip that information here. In short, installation should take about 10 minutes and the app offers simple and straightforward instructions to get it up and running.

Now let’s dive into how to use the Wyze Light Strip in practice. Here I will discuss its various features and how they worked for me during my testing.

Wyze app

The Wyze app is the centerpiece of your light bar. You can turn the light on and off, adjust its color or White light color temperature and darken it. This is where you can customize your settings and try out some of the more advanced features.

The application is very easy to use. It’s easy to find and adjust settings as needed.

voice commands

I have associated my Wyze Light Strip with a file Amazon Echo Show 5 And try some commands. It changed colors quickly, turning the light on and off and dimming it for me. Here is a list of some of the commands I’ve tried:

• “Alexa, set ‘Light Strip’ to pink.”
• “Alexa, dim the ‘Light Strip’ light to 75%.”
• Alexa, turn off/on “Light Strip”.

As I had hoped, Alexa responded differently to “setting the Light Strip to pink” versus “dark pink” and adjusting the lights accordingly.

Timers and scenes

The timer feature allows you to set the on/off timer for your Wyze light bar anywhere from 1 minute to 23 hours 59 minutes.

In terms of scenes, Wyze has some options preloaded in the app, broken down into color temperature and color scenes. Color temperature scenes range from warm white light to cool white light and include: night light (warmer), warm, incandescent and vivid (cooler). Colored scenes include: energy (orange), games (purple), movie (blue), and meditation (yellow).

You can create additional scenes in the app and customize them however you like.

Vacation mode

As you’d expect, Vacation Mode randomizes the Wyze Light Strip by turning it on and off automatically to mimic being at home.

To enable this option, go to settings and toggle on vacation mode.

Wake up/Sleep feature

Wyze’s sleep routines feature is designed to mimic the sunrise and sunset based on the time of day to help you wake up and fall asleep more easily. This highly customizable option lets you choose how long – anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour – your start time and which days of the week you want to use sleep routines.

The Wake Up option also allows you to customize the finish brightness and color temperature.

I can’t say if the sleep procedures helped me wake up or fall asleep more easily, but the light strip gradually got brighter and more intense in the morning and reversed the process at night.

In addition to the sleep routines, Wyze also offers a Sun Match mode that changes the light bar throughout the day “to mimic natural sunlight.” Like Vacation mode, you can set up this feature simply by turning it on in Settings. I found this feature unnecessary because I work in a room with a lot of natural light, but it can be a great option if you work in a basement or anywhere that doesn’t have a lot of natural daylight.

Sync lights with music

The Wyze console – the connecting piece between the light strip and the transducer – has a built-in microphone. If you set the LED bar to Music mode in the Wyze app, the bar will change color randomly (if you switch to the Auto Color option) every time it hears a sound.

There are three preset options called Shadow, Leap, and Flicker that respond differently to sound and how they rotate to the next color.

You can also adjust the sensitivity from low to high if you want the light bar to be more or less responsive to sound.

Work with other Wyze products

This light bar can also work with other Wyze devices. I’ve set up a rule in the app so that every time the porch light turns on, the Wyze Light Strip turns on as well (and as colors purple).

This isn’t a particularly functional rule, but it was nice to see it working regardless. If you have a different set of Wyze products, you may find automation a little more useful, but it worked as expected.

last thoughts

Wyze Light Strip has plenty of options at a great price. It’s easy to set up and use – and has plenty of room for customization. However, this LED strip cannot display more than one color at a time; Only Wyze Light Strip Pro can do that. And while my light bar hung well during testing (including moving it around my house), I don’t think it would have held up with more movement.

Overall, for $20 (for the 16.4-foot version), this is a solid product that can give your home a fun dose of color with minimal effort.
