Superman: The Movie It is one of the most popular and admired movies both in cinema and in the comic book movie subgenre. Not only did he hold that title for decades, but he also demonstrated one of Superman’s most impressive feats on screen, the ability to change history. For decades, viewers have witnessed the character literally change time to save Lois Lane’s life, and the sheer spectacle of her was enough to disregard the logic behind such a feat, but one theorist may have finally found an explanation that, while complex, provides an almost foolproof answer to Superman’s time travel.
In the film, Lex Luthor devises a plan to detonate a massive bomb on the San Andreas Fault to separate the West Coast from the United States and use the land as free real estate to claim it. At first, the plan was carried out almost without a hitch, but Lois Lane, trapped in a crack in the ground, suffocated and was buried in the rubble. Furious, Superman flew into the air, defying Jor-El’s warning not to tamper with human history and turning back time early enough to save his love. However, Reddit theorist Cilarnen believes that Superman isn’t looking back in time. Instead, time travel into the past to reverse what was done.
While confusing the decoding at a glance, physics is explained to show that Superman has exceeded the speed of light to succeed in his plan. Physics also showed that any object moving at this rate would technically be traveling backwards in time; Hence, things happened in the opposite direction the faster he flew. This is why he traveled through time rather than reversing it, because the world and its inhabitants would never survive the Earth’s rotation if it stopped and reversed.
As for the rotation, it is interpreted as an optical illusion because Sobs traveled through time. For fans, his time traveling is seen as going back in time, similar to Jules Verne. Time Machine. Everything happens at a back-to-back rate for viewers, but Superman is just looking for the perfect point to stop traveling. This is why when it appears to be going in the opposite direction, the planet does not return to the correct rotation. Instead, he’s at a new point in time, and uses his remaining speed to find and help Lois before things go wrong.
The film then featured Superman saving Louis and capturing Lex Luthor, but he apparently avoided the disaster that occurred earlier in the film. It’s a bit of a baffling moment but it could have happened before more issues appeared. Thanks to Superman, he now has more time to save lives, like Lois, and prevent Luthor from succeeding in his plan. While this is the only aspect of the theory that makes less sense, fortunately it is not enough to debunk it completely, as it may open up larger inconsistencies in the story.
Superman being a time traveler isn’t a title he’d worn in movies before, but the idea he felt was appropriate for that era of Man of Steel. Even better is the idea of physics behind it. It preserved the integrity of the film, but also added another level of entertainment to many fans of the classic film and increased how clever this iteration of Clark Kent was, thanks to his time spent in Castle of Solitude. In the end, the theory completely changed the idea of why Superman is the man of tomorrow.
