Latest COVID travel requirements for Central America, including Belize and Costa Rica

Countries in Central America have relaxed their travel restrictions in recent months, making them easier destinations for Americans to plan visits during the busy spring and summer travel seasons. However, each country has its own sets of rules and restrictions, and what is acceptable at one destination may not work with another.

While planning some much-needed vacations, it can be helpful to review the latest rules regarding testing, vaccinations, and other requirements in popular destinations, including Belize, Costa Rica, and Panama.

Here are the latest requirements and restrictions for travel in Central American countries, according to the Central American Tourism Agency.

Belize travel restrictions

Vaccinated travelers do not need to test negative for COVID-19 to enter Belize as of March 1, 2022. However, proof of vaccination is required when arriving at Belize airports or ports or crossing land borders. If you have not been vaccinated (or do not have sufficient evidence), you will need to show negative results from a PCR test done within 72 hours of arrival, or a rapid antigen test done 48 hours before arrival in Belize. You can also get a test at most entry points into Belize (including the airport) for $50.

Most travelers should also purchase travel insurance in Belize. It costs $18 per person and provides coverage for emergency medical services and a COVID-19 quarantine.

Guatemala travel restrictions

To visit Guatemala by air or land, travelers 12 years of age and older must show proof of vaccination against COVID-19. You should have received your last dose at least 2 weeks before the start of your trip.

Travelers to Guatemala who have not been vaccinated must provide evidence of a negative COVID-19 antigen test or polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test performed by an accredited laboratory 3 days prior to your flight.

Travel Restrictions in El Salvador

El Salvador is among the least restrictive destinations in Central America when it comes to COVID-19. As of November 2021, travelers to El Salvador do not need to present a negative COVID-19 test or proof of vaccination. However, keep in mind that some flights to El Salvador from the United States have stops at other destinations, which may have their own vaccination and testing requirements.

More information about travel to El Salvador during the pandemic can be found through the country’s Ministry of Tourism.

Honduras travel restrictions

Honduras requires travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19. Unvaccinated travelers must show a negative PCR or antigen test within 72 hours of arrival. Regardless of which option applies to you, you will need to fill out a pre-registration form 7 days before entering Honduras.

You must also complete the online entry application form at least one week before your flight.

Costa Rica travel restrictions

Costa Rica has removed most travel restrictions from April 1, 2022. You no longer need to complete the country’s health passport, purchase an insurance policy, show proof of vaccination, or have a negative COVID-19 test to enter the country. However, the state still recommends travelers purchase insurance that covers medical treatment and places of quarantine, just in case.
