Spring 2022 travel restrictions in Australia

Australia reopened its international borders in February 2022 for the first time since the pandemic began. As countries around the world gradually relax their entry guidelines, Australian travel restrictions are following suit.

Current entry requirements for vaccinated tourists to Australia

Below are the current travel restrictions for fully vaccinated visitors to Australia, which are considered more lenient than the original entry requirements.

No pre-arrival test

As of April 18, 2022, fully vaccinated travelers no longer need to obtain a negative pre-arrival test.

Previously, a pre-arrival test had to be done one day prior to arrival. This light requirement applies to airline passengers and cruise ships.

As a result, Australia joins the list of countries without test requirements.

Abroad vaccination certificate

International visitors must provide proof of coronavirus vaccinations to enter. The airline is responsible for checking the vaccination requirements upon check-in.

Lack of evidence can result in disqualification as a fully vaccinated traveler, leading to mandatory quarantine, testing or denial of entry.

Australian Digital Traveler Announcement

Inbound visitors must also complete a digital travel declaration. This form collects the traveler’s contact details, travel history for the last 14 days, and local quarantine and testing requirements.

Quarantine requirements

There are no quarantine requirements for fully vaccinated travelers coming from the United States. However, states can enact domestic travel restrictions if infection and hospitalization rates increase.

mask authorization

The commercial travel mask mandate is still valid on international flights arriving in Australia.

States and local cities also have public mask rules but they vary by location. Masks are usually required in high-risk indoor areas.

Cruise Travel to Australia Restarts

Australia will again allow cruise travel from April 18, 2022. This is the first time that cruise ships can come to Australia since 2020. Only fully vaccinated visitors are welcome to go ashore at this time.

Australia travel ban for unvaccinated visitors

Australia still bans unvaccinated and partially vaccinated visitors for non-essential travel reasons. These international travel restrictions are common across Oceania, Asia, Europe and the Americas.

There are currently no indications that the Australian government will ease this travel ban anytime soon.

summary

While Australia remains only open to fully vaccinated tourists, not having to get pre-arrival testing removes the travel barrier. This is a welcome change as travel groups try to make international access more accessible.
